I like to engage physically with the raw material, pursuing a careful balance between fragility and bold strength, while the firing process enables the clay to develop a more undulating, independent sense of self.
Louise creates wild, but delicate, hand-built ceramics using glazed and un-glazed porcelain to construct beaten, distorted forms with soft curves and interrupted contours. She has learnt to push the translucent nature of fine porcelain to its full and extraordinary extent, producing illusory effects in form and texture that are totally unlike clay. Newer work bridges the gap between decorative aesthetics and functional pieces, with the addition of jugs and beakers to the collection. Louise graduated from the Decorative Arts course at Nottingham Trent University in 2011. She focused on textiles and ceramics in her final year and produced a series of porcelain lighting and soft interior furnishings, linked by surface pattern.
She returned to start her Master's Degree as she was not wholly satisfied with the final outcome of her earlier work. This time the sole intent was to explore her ceramics work only, through experimentation with the materiality of clay. The work changed greatly, and this year of learning and growing in confidence enabled her to apply for the Graduate Scholarship at Fireworks Clay Sutdios in Cardiff.
A month after completing the MA with Distinction in July 2012, Louise was awarded the scholarship and moved to Fireworks to begin her career as a ceramicist. She is now a permanent member of the Collective, with her own studio. She produces work for craft shows, festivals, exhibitions, galleries and private commissions.
