T H E S E D A R K W O O D S and other work Paintings and prints by Allan Martin
Opening Night Friday 29th May 2015 from 6pm Exhibition continues 30th May - August 2015 Lane House Arts Gallery, Bath “I am drawn to creating images which have simplicity, to achieve a sense of reality but not a direct translation, to include a shift, something present which is not fully explained or known. Recent paintings explore themes which demanded the work be monochromatic.”
Allan Martin’s fine subtle paintings seek something unknown, unsettling, yet familiar and seductive. They explore thought and mood, evoking atmosphere rather than simply a reference to landscape or place. Often working in almost monochromatic hues, the most subtle change in tone registers and is somehow amplified. Light is darkened and the landscape invaded by something not fully defined but open to interpretation. He is drawn to creating images which have simplicity, to achieve a sense of reality but not a direct translation. Figures are included as an inherent part of the theme, alone in their own dark, anonymous space. A recent shift to work in colour explores some of the same themes.
