This May, the space is a riot of colour with new contemporary landscape paintings from Kathryn Stevens and stunning ceramic pieces from new gallery artist, Maria Wojdat, both alumnae of Bath School of Art and Design at Bath Spa University.
Each piece Maria makes is a unique journey encompassing an appreciation of chance and exploring the balance between colour, line and form. Inspired by opposing themes of spontaneity/control; organic/geometric; order/disorder, the forms emerge from a process which examines the relationship between instinctive action and form. The result is intuitive, almost unconsidered movements which allow and encourage the unexpected to develop.
Kathryn's recent paintings show a fluid depth created by this emerging artist's increasing knowledge and understanding of oil paint. With growing confidence, Kathryn tests the boundaries and constantly redefines her work to create subtle details within the canvases which become bold statements of colour. Born and brought up in Cornwall near St Ives, the influence of her dramatic environment is clear in the notion of landscape in her powerful canvases. She currently lives in Bristol.
