ALLAN MARTIN OPEN HOUSE GROUP SHOW Lane House, Biddestone, Wiltshire October 2019 - January 2020
“I am drawn to creating images which have simplicity, to achieve a sense of reality but not a direct translation, to include a shift, something present which is not fully explained or known. Often paintings explore themes which demanded the work be monochromatic. Now colour is finding a way through…..
With both parents being art teachers and artists, art had always been around me and remains a constant in my life, a core aspect of my creative interests and who I am. I adored studying a design discipline at art school, and wanted that rationale as my way forward. The subsequent creative challenges and varied experiences opened to me as I found my way in graphic design were truly valuable and enjoyable. However, I always intended to explore painting more fully. I like where it leads and relish the challenge. I wanted to find time to paint. Now I have, and it feels right”.
Allan Martin's fine subtle paintings seek something unknown, unsettling, yet familiar and seductive. They explore thought and mood, evoking atmosphere rather than simply a reference to landscape or place. Often working in almost monochromatic hues, the most subtle change in tone registers and is somehow amplified. Light is darkened and the landscape invaded by something not fully defined but open to interpretation. He is drawn to creating images which have simplicity, to achieve a sense of reality but not a direct translation. Figures are included as an inherent part of the theme, alone in their own dark, anonymous space. A recent shift to work in colour explores some of the same themes.
