Maxine is a multi-disciplinary artist working mainly in the mediums of screen-print, monotype, intaglio and paint, frequently using palimpsest within the complexity of her multi-layered pieces. Focusing on the urban and natural environment, Maxine combines street scenes and unusual buildings, focusing in on their unique surfaces and finding beauty in that which has been eroded and altered over the decades. She draws inspiration from a multitude of facets found in cities such as graffiti, decay, and day-to-day marks, often connecting them with their water sources: destruction and deterioration within their beaches and harbours. Her bodies of work features Barcelona, Bristol, Petaluma, Alcatraz, Dillon Beach CA, and Devon’s South Coast.
Maxine Foster was born in the Georgian city of Bath and her art has been influenced by its lines of architecture. In recent years she has travelled further afield to gain greater insight into international city architecture and how it influences and affects us.
A background in graphic design has helped her create strong bold images within her work. She concentrates in the media of screen and mono print, interpreting both ancient and modern buildings in snapshots of our urban surroundings.
Maxine graduated from the University of the West of England, Bristol in June 2018, with a Masters in Multi-Disciplinary printmaking. At the Flourish Award 2018 she won the Hawthorn Printmakers Prize for best emerging student/recent graduate artist, exhibited at the RBSA Birmingham, The Master’s ‘Screen and Stone’ (Bankside Gallery, London) and Interruptions Exhibition in Athens. She is a member of the Bath Society of Artists and has exhibited her work during their Member’s exhibition and annual summer shows at the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath and at the RWA Bristol. Maxine jointly curated the Bath Society Member’s exhibition in October 2018, and ‘In The Moment’ exhibition at Gallery 57, Mayfair in March 2019. She holds work in private collections nationally and internationally. At Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in November 2019 Maxine had the chance to show how she uses her palimpsest-like techniques during a print demonstration at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in 2019 and was delighted to be included in their Artist Focus: ‘Women in Print’ in 2020.
She currently lives and works in Trowbridge, near Bath.
