BELONGING Solo show of paintings by GINA BROWN 22nd April - May 2017 Lane House Arts Gallery, Bath and introducing ceramic sculpture by MILLY HARDY
I create biographical paintings that look at the compulsion to collect keepsakes and mementos as a powerful means of possession. Working from photographic sources I hint at the illusion of intimacy and the desire to form an attachment with remnants of the past; such as postcard beauties of the Edwardian era or faded family photos from an old album.
With translucent layers of oil paint and muted colours I stay faithful to the source whilst omitting key details and features to recreate the image and claim it as my own.
The inner faces I paint are tinged with melancholy and the fleeting transience of youth and beauty. This inspires a compelling narrative as I collect, reclaim and translate a forgotten source into a painting and someone else forms an attachment; feeling a sense of belonging or sentiment. In my work this underlines a haunting ambivalence which ultimately represents nostalgic ideasof familiarity and intrigue.
“It is like I am looking at my own family photos, like I belong, like they belong to me…”
My work is informed by the inherent qualities of clay and finding processes which allow these qualities to come to the forefront of what I’m making. I’m interested in Geology: how natural forms occur like stalagmites or rock formations and how I can take these processes and use them to create my own ceramic forms.
I use extruding which is a controlled and mechanical process that uses pressure to force clay through a predetermined template. In contrast to this the outcome I achieve is a textured and fluid form, both qualities often seen throughout my work.
I work by producing a series of objects and to ensure cohesion between these objects, I keep the shape, form and colour consistent. By doing this I find that there is a more obvious interaction within the work. Working in multiples is an aesthetic choice, but this is also to exaggerate, to show how versatile clay is and how a repeat process can produce unique and individual objects.
