ANDREW TEMPLE SMITH

ABOUT

"I am interested in finding the balance between control and the element of chance and how these seemingly opposite qualities can be combined in a complementary way."

Andrew's work is based around thrown porcelain  which he uses for its colour, texture and translucency. He enjoys both the technical challenge of working with this material and the tactile quality of the finished surface. Andrew is drawn to minimalist and elemental forms but with evidence of process being an important consideration. The memory of the hand is still visible in the final pieces and is a vital part of their whole.

The 'control' is evident in the process of throwing the three dimensional forms. The 'chance' is referenced variously by the formation of sinuous eddies of different coloured porcelains during throwing, the movement of boiling glazes at white heat, or the way throwing spirals are faintly revealed through abraded layers of slip.

Andrew began studying ceramics at City and Islington College in 2004 and since moving to Bath with his family in 2005, has continued his ceramic practice from his own studio. He has a Masters in Fine Art from Bath School of Design, Bath Spa University.
