ABOUT Abigail North trained in ceramics in London and later in Devon under the guidance of Bruce Chivers, and after a year as an assistant to the potter Penny Simpson, now works from her own studio on the edge of Dartmoor.
She makes finely thrown porcelain and stoneware vessels which are carefully decorated by hand with a range of coloured slips, and then glazed with a transparent glaze. A further range of work which combines two different coloured clay bodies, is evocative of the landscape on Dartmoor.
And in her studio adjacent to the moor, surrounded by beautiful ferns and lichen, the most recent project comprises of a series of bowls and vases with a delicate fern decoration, a modern reworking of the traditional mocha-ware decorating technique.
All work is decorated and then biscuit fired before it is glazed and then high fired in an electric kiln.
Abigail is a member of the West Country Potters Association, and has twice been a selected 'Guest Maker' at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. She has exhibited at a number of national and international craft events, and her work can be viewed in galleries in Devon and beyond. She is a selected maker at www.craftanddesign.net and a selected maker in the Crafts Council Directory.
